Schools: frequently asked questions

What refrigeration does a school canteen need?

Usually slimline multideck fridges for self-service sandwiches, salads and yoghurts, a glass door chiller for drinks, a display freezer for frozen desserts and, in the kitchen, upright storage fridges and prep counters.

Can canteen fridges be locked?

Yes – the mirrored stainless steel shutter multidecks have an integral lockable shutter, and the chest display freezer has a lock.

Which multideck fits a narrow servery?

Our slimline multidecks are 600 mm deep and come in widths from 600 to 1800 mm, so they fit narrow serveries and can be combined into a longer service line.

Do you supply colleges and universities?

Yes. Colleges, universities, campus shops and staff restaurants buy the same cabinets; contact us for larger or phased orders.

Is delivery included?

Delivery to UK mainland addresses is free; deliveries above York, Leeds and Blackpool or outside the mainland carry an extra charge. Deliveries can be planned for school holidays.

Refrigeration for school and college catering

School, college and university canteens serve hundreds of students in short breaks. The refrigeration has to let them pick up a sandwich, a salad or a drink quickly, keep food safe through the service and stay secure when the canteen is closed. The cabinets on this page are the ones schools, academies, colleges, campus shops and staff restaurants use most.

Self-service at the counter

  • Slimline multideck fridges – open self-service fridges from 600 to 1800 mm wide and only 600 mm deep, for sandwiches, wraps, salads, fruit pots, yoghurts and milk. Several can be lined up to make a fast-moving service line.
  • Shutter multidecks – mirrored stainless steel multidecks with a lockable shutter, so stock is secure between breaks and overnight.
  • Open flat glass cabinet – a low stainless steel grab and go display for a staff room or sixth-form café.

Drinks and frozen

Glass door chillers – from a half-height model to single, double and sliding door uprights – keep water, milk and juices cold while students see what is available. Upright glass door display freezers and a sliding glass lid chest freezer hold frozen desserts, and give a campus shop a frozen range without a separate storage freezer.

Behind the counter

Catering kitchens need upright storage fridges and freezers for bulk stock, refrigerated prep counters at the preparation area and under counter fridges for service. See our storage cabinets for the full kitchen range.

Planning a canteen

  • Plan for the busiest break: the queue should reach the multideck, pick up and move on without crossing other queues.
  • Put drinks chillers at the end of the line, next to the till, so students don’t stop in the middle of the service.
  • Choose lockable cabinets for areas that are open between breaks or used for events.
  • Check the floor and the route from the delivery door – a 1200 mm multideck weighs well over 200 kg.

Food safety and standards

Keep chilled food at 8 °C or below (most caterers aim for 1–5 °C), record cabinet temperatures daily, and label every product with allergen information. Schools in England must also follow the School Food Standards when choosing what to put in the cabinets.
